Hannibal preservationist to hold hands-on tutorial for students from around country

HANNIBAL, Mo. -- Twelve students from across the country will be in Hannibal for three days this weekend to learn about historic preservation.
Bob Yapp, president of Preservation Resources Inc., will start Friday the first of a series of hands-on restoration tutorials with a "Window Restoration College" at the 1859 Lamb-Munger House, 521 Bird.
"I've found over the years people learn best when they get to play in the sandbox," Yapp said.
The students will remove, repair and replace the double-hung windows of the Lamb-Munger House. They will learn sash removal, safe paint and glass removal, epoxy wood repair, glazing putty application, weather stripping and sash installation.
Yapp said students will learn how to restore a double-hung window, and have a product that is more energy and cost efficient than replacement windows.
Yapp has restored more than 5,000 windows in his 34-year career.
"Historic windows are one of the main architectural features of a historic house," he said. "There is not a vinyl window ever made that can mimic or look like the original window with their multiple panes or division of light."
Yapp and his wife, Pat, plan to use the Lamb-Munger House as a lab for additional restoration colleges. The house had been a four-unit apartment complex for several years.
