The Madison Shoebox, the Quincy Gems’ scheduled exhibition opponent on Friday, never showed up. That left the Gems and general manager Rob Ebbing scrambling.
The Gems ended up competing in a 2 1/2 hour home run derby, which was won by Matt Tracy. “We were flying basically by the seat of our pants — from the press box to the live mic on the field,” Ebbing said. “And the people that stayed, and weathered out the rain and everything else thought that the home run derby was just awesome.”
