Italian comic opera tells tale of love -- with English titles

The Muddy River Opera Company will produce the comic opera "L'Elisir d'Amore (The Elixir of Love)," by Gaetano Donizetti, at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in the Quincy Community Theatre.

English text of the Italian opera will be shown above the stage.

The show tells the tale of the clever and beautiful Adina, her ardent admirer Nemorino, and the lengths to which he will go to win her heart.

It is a story of romance, good fortune and living happily ever after. This opera contains one of the great tenor arias, "Una furtiva Lagrima."

Principals are Victoria Botero, soprano, of Kansas City, who will sing the role of Adina; Robert Boldin, tenor, of Pittsburgh, who will sing the role of the young peasant Nemorino; Teppie Kono, baritone, of Chicago, who will sing the role of Belcore; bass Bill McMurray of Chicago, who takes the role of Doctor Dulcamara, a physician who sells a "love potion" to the young Nemorino that will supposedly give him the confidence he needs to win Adina's heart.

Children who attend the opera will receive a special children's program, a small bottle of Magic Potion, a treat and a drawing for a special prize.

Each adult patron will receive a free drawing ticket for a white, 18 inch, freshwater pearl necklace donated by Dame and Hurdle Jewelers. The drawing will be held at intermission Sunday.
