Quincy Herald Whig http://qui.live.mediaspanonlinen.com/rss/ Quincy Herald Whig en-us New club to open in space once occupied by Maine Street Tap By JAMIE BUSENHerald-Whig Staff WriterA new nightclub will open in one week in the building formerly occupied by the Maine Street Tap.Steve Homan, 34, will open The Phoenix, at 10 p.m. on Oct. 17. He received his nightclub license from the city Friday morning and was on his way to Springfield Friday afternoon to obtain his state license for the club at 621-625 Maine.“I like being in this business. I think it’s fun, and a challenge,” said Homan, who also is a part-time UPS driver.Homan says he has previous experience in the bar business, having helped manage The Odyssey and Backwaters.Central State Bank owns the 16,000-square-foot building, and Homan is leasing with an option to buy in one year. Financial terms were not disclosed. The building was previously owned by Jeffrey Jansen and two others who opened the tavern in September 2005. Jansen later became the sole owner. The business ceased operations after the Illinois Department of Revenue revoked the tavern’s state liquor license on Aug. 31, 2007, for nonpayment of state sales taxes. The bank subsequently foreclosed on the mortgage and has since been seeking a new owner/operator.Quincy Mayor John Spring said he sees this as “great news.”“Steve has experience ... I think that we’ve got a responsible operator,” he said. “So many dollars were put into this, and it’s great to see somebody else is going to try to make a go of it. This is good for our community.”Adams County, the city and the Great River Economic Development Foundation each provided $25,000 loans to help buy equipment and machinery used in the multilevel club.City planner Chuck Bevelheimer said the three entities will receive a combined total of around $100 a month during the leasing period. He said they decided to leave the machinery in the tavern, since it would be worth more with a bar than without a bar.“We’d have to negotiate (about the machinery) if (Homan) assumes to execute the option to buy,” Bevelheimer said.  Homan said he plans on being a “focused, driven” operator, making sure everything runs smoothly and efficiently while taking care of his patrons. He will operate three bars inside and has already hired 10 employees. Operating hours will be open from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 10 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. on Saturdays.Homan said a dress code will be enforced. He also said the Phoenix will have a beer garden, dance floor, pool tables, juke box, dart boards and video games. “It’s going to work,” he said. http://qui.live.mediaspanonline.com/new_story/maine-street-tap-SAT
