Mike Hilfrink

Mike Hilfrink is a Quincy native and the third generation of his family to work at The Herald-Whig. He joined the newspaper as a reporter in 1970 after graduating with a degree in communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana, where he also worked at the Champaign-Urbana Courier. He joined the staff of The Daily Dispatch in Moline in 1975, holding a series of editorial positions before returning to The Herald-Whig as managing editor in 1984. Hilfrink was named executive editor in 2001 and has served as executive editor/general manager since 2009.

Tony Baker recently watched a video of the 1991 Class A state championship game with his 11-year-old daughter. It had been several years since Baker, an all-stater as a senior at Pittsfield High School, had seen the game. "I sure was awful skinny, and those shorts were awful short," he said with a laugh. "But it was neat to watch. It's kind of a blur, but I can remember plays that were called in every game. It's so surreal."
