Phil Carlson joined The Herald-Whig as a staff photographer in 2003 and was named photo editor in 2007. He earned a bachelor's degree in art from Truman State University and studied photojournalism at Metro State College in Denver. Carlson has won numerous awards as a staff photographer in Quincy, Topeka, Kan., and Hannibal, Mo.
