To The Herald-Whig:

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped Bickford Cottage Assisted Living and Memory Care at 4221 Maine St. in Quincy have a very successful community yard sale fundraiser for our 2011 Walk to End Alzheimer's team on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States and numbers are still climbing. Support for research, treatments, programs and support are needed now more than ever.

Bickford was created to care for Mary Bickford, a family member with Alzheimer's. Family members set out to give their mother a place where she would not only get the very best care possible, but also be surrounded by caregivers who loved her like family in a place that felt like home. Bickford in Quincy is the epitome of that dream, and supporting the Walk to End Alzheimer's is a top priority of our entire Bickford Family.

Someday, thanks to widespread support like this, we hope to see a cure and an end to the terrible suffering felt by people with Alzheimer's and their families. Until then, we are thankful for a place like Bickford in Quincy where all seniors can get the absolute most out of every day, just like they deserve.

Items for the sale were donated by Bickford residents, family members, caregivers and staff, and many friends of the "Bickford Family" here in Quincy. In addition, many caregivers, residents, family members and friends were instrumental in the setup and overall success of the sale itself.

We also want to thank Pepsi for donating the Pepsi Wagon full of ice-cold and refreshing drinks for all of our yard-salers and workers -- what a great complement to the grilled hot dogs and brownies baked fresh at Bickford and enjoyed by many.

Anyone needing more information regarding Alzheimer's support in our area can contact the Quincy Area Alzheimer's Association at 639 York by calling 228-1111.

Thanks again and God bless everyone for their support.
