FUNNY MEETING YOU HERE: Amy Bonano, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Westoff of Quincy, recently attended the "Heart of a Solider" opera at the San Francisco Opera House in San Francisco, Calif. While there, Bonano met and had her picture taken with Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Stewart, whose book of the same title the opera is built around. Stewart is a native of Quincy and a friend of the Westoff family. Amy and Her husband, Mark, live in Salinas, Calif., a community not far away from San Francisco. The Bonanos found out Stewart would be at the opera and were able to hook up for a brief reunion.
FIRST MILE: The Rev. James Hailey of Bethel AME will be unofficially credited with running the first mile on the new indoor track area inside the Kroc Center, 405 Vermont, the $27.5 million facility that is being dedicated today. Hailey was part of a group able to tour the facility earlier this week and tried out some of the amenities. Twelve times around the track is supposed to equal a mile, but Hailey informed, "A mile is actually 12 1/2 times around the track," Hailey said.
ULTIMATE SACRIFICE: Like many other organizations and businesses in the area, Adams County is looking to help the United Way of Adams County in its annual campaign drive. A few events and a raffle have been planned, including a cookout on the courthouse lawn on Sept. 29 featuring pork sandwiches. Regional Superintendent of Schools Debbie Niederhauser, who serves on the Adams County United Way Team, gave an overview on the events at last week's County Board meeting. She also offered thanks to County Board member Mark Peter, a farmer from Mendon, who donated a hog for the cookout. "It's the pig that's really making the sacrifice," Peter quipped.
