The Quincy School Board gave a pat on the back Wednesday to seven district employees who played a role in a life-saving effort June 5 at Adams Elementary School.

Assistant Superintendent Christie Dickens told board members the incident involved an unidentified Kohl's deliveryman who collapsed while at Adams School.

She said Rusty Miller, a custodian, saw the man collapse and stayed with him while Karen Stork, a cafeteria worker, called for an ambulance.

Laura Henke, a school nurse working at Adams that day, was summoned and determined the man's heart had stopped beating. She immediately performed CPR, and the man regained consciousness before he was transported by ambulance to Blessing Hospital, where a stent was inserted into a blocked blood vessel to help restore circulation.

While Henke was performing the CPR, Katie Stegner helped out by handing her supplies as needed. In addition, Principal Marcey Wells and district employees Tracy Farmer and Scott Watkins also were on hand to offer assistance until emergency workers arrived on the scene.

"What a great team effort," school nurse Jean Martin wrote in a note to the district's administrative leaders, shared by Dickens. "They truly saved this man's life."

The seven employees were introduced and received a standing ovation at Wednesday's board meeting.
