A 12-run outburst wasn’t enough for the Hannibal Cavemen Wednesday night. Neither was an eight-run eighth inning.
Instead, a pair of five-run innings helped Dubois County beat the Cavemen 17-12 in a Prospect League game at Huntingburg, Ind.
In the eighth, Hannibal had five hits to go with three walks. The big hit of the inning was Zach Nichols’ grand slam with two outs which closed the gap to 16-12. Nichols finished 3 for 4 with six RBI. He also hit a two-run double in the top of the third to tie the score at 2.
The Bombers scored four runs in the bottom of the third and added five more in the fourth. Hannibal’s Daniel Peters went 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Hannibal, 0-2 in the second half of the season, will host Quincy in the first of a two-game series at 6:35 tonight at Clemens Field.
