The Quincy Exchange Club is looking for people to take a certified barbecue judging class Saturday, Aug. 4.
Certified judges Bunny and Rich Tuttle will teach the Kansas City Barbeque Society Certified Judges Class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at America's Best Value Inn, 300 S. Third in Quincy. The first two hours includes paperwork, instruction and video on the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and how to judge the four meats -- chicken, ribs, pork shoulder and beef brisket.
After attending this class, the new certified judges can contact any KCBS contest and request to be a judge. The Quincy Exchange Club is hosting its annual Smoke on the River barbecue competition Sept. 7-8 and we will need additional certified judges for this event. There are also additional KCBS events in the area.
After the morning instruction, the next two hours allow the participants to judge and eat samples. The meats will be prepared and presented just like the barbecue competition, and then judged on appearance, texture and taste. In order to have consistent competition, it is necessary for all judges to understand and rate the contest meats the same.
The cost of the course is $55 for KCBS members, and $90 for nonmembers. The difference in the fee includes the society's annual $35 membership. The fee also covers registration, the certified judge booklet, a judge badge, and all course materials and expenses and the food.
The KCBS membership includes a monthly newspaper "The BullSheet," which lists all competition results and upcoming events.
