Prep volleyball roundup: Western shows it's a force to be feared

The Western volleyball team proved Tuesday that it shouldn't be overlooked when Class 1A regional play opens in three weeks.

The Lady Wildcats snagged a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20 West Central Conference South Division win over Unity at Mendon behind 12 kills from Evan Colston.

Western (11-10) and Unity are both in the five-team Barry Regional. Although seeds haven't been released yet for the regional, based on record, Western probably will be the No. 4 seed.

The Lady Wildcats played like a front runner against Unity (14-7). Western's Amber Platt tallied 26 assists and 13 digs, and Morgan Ryan racked up 24 digs.

Mandie Brooks led Unity with 21 digs, while Brooklyn Moore and Libby Beers had seven kills apiece.

Quincy High School d. Galesburg: M.J. Garkie finished with 12 service points and nine digs to lead the Blue Devils to a Western Big Six Conference win on the road. India Green led QHS (23-1, 6-0) with 15 assists, while Anna
Stock tallied six kills and Alex Dietrich collected three blocks.

Quincy Notre Dame d. Southeastern: The Lady Raiders started slow in both sets but pulled out a 25-18, 25-14 victory on Senior Night at The Pit.

QND fell behind by three points in the opener and trailed 4-2 in the finale before scoring six of the next seven points to pull in front.

Cassidy Foley led the Lady Raiders (19-3-1) with eight kills and 16 digs, while Riley Hummert finished with five kills. Grace Horman added 13 digs and Kristen Gengenbacher handed out 25 assists for QND.

Dakota Limkemann had five kills to lead Southeastern (11-12). Whitney Willard tallied 11 digs for the Lady Suns, and Ali Kerr had six assists.

Payson-Seymour d. Pittsfield: Kristen Loos had five kills, three aces and eight digs to lead the Lady Indians to a 25-16, 25-11 WCC South win at Payson.

Harlee Flesner also had five kills for Payson (15-9), while Katelyn Wolf had 13 assists.

Destiny Miller had six digs, four assists and a kill for Pittsfield, and Alyssa Heavner had a team-high four kills.

Illini West d Monmouth-Roseville: The Chargers rallied for a 19-25, 25-9, 25-16 WCC North win at Monmouth.

Holly McDowell had 13 kills for Illini West (15-9), and Addison Ufkes added eight kills and four aces. Holly Jones led the Chargers with 23 assists, and Shelby Thompson and Graci Bastert had 11 digs apiece.

Liberty d. West Hancock: Katy Claus finished with 12 digs and six kills to lead the Lady Eagles to a 25-17, 25-15 WCC South win at Liberty.

Meredith Hyer tallied 21 assists for Liberty (15-5), and Maranda Neisen added eight service points.

Madison Harmon led West Hancock with 16 assists and seven digs, while Hannah Wollbrink added six kills and four digs.
