Area Roundup: Highland holds off Pirates' rally

The Hannibal boys basketball team missed what would have been a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer Monday, giving Highland a 61-58 home win.

Brandon Davie and Derick Smith each scored 21 points for the Cougars (1-0).

The Pirates trailed by seven heading into the fourth quarter before rallying late. Austin Richmiller finished with 11 points for Highland.

Dalton Powell led Hannibal (1-4) with 25 points.


West Hancock 67, Biggsville West Central 64: The Titans' Allison Dewald sank two free throws with 13 seconds left to give West Hancock (1-2) its first win.

West Central missed what would have been a game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

The Titans held a 48-47 lead entering the fourth quarter before allowing the Heat to take the lead.

West Hancock regained control midway through the fourth quarter when Shelby Koehler, who finished with a team-high 13 points, scored eight points in a row to tie the game.

Alexis Dooley (10 points and 11 rebounds) and Madison Harmon (11 points) also finished in double digits for the Titans.

"We had a solid effort from all nine players this evening," Titans coach Adam Brumbaugh said.

Calhoun 57, Western 42: Senior Rachel Motley led the Wildcats with 14 points in a home loss. Western (2-3) cut its deficit to six points with four minutes remaining but didn't score for the rest of the game.

Western was hurt by going just 11 of 22 from the free-throw line.

"We played well in the second half, as we increased our (defensive) pressure," Western coach Jim Shields said. "But we had to foul, and they made their free throws, and we didn't."

Shannon Gates scored nine points, and Amber Platt added eight for the Wildcats.

Hannibal 42, Highland 28: Theresa Sheffer finished with 13 points to lead the Lady Pirates (1-0) to a season-opening win on the road.

Hannibal limited the Lady Cougars (0-1) to nine first-half points. Kylee Anderson also scored 12 points for the Lady Pirates.

Casey Hinkle led Highland with eight points.


Culver-Stockton 80, Iowa Wesleyan 64: Marshawn Norris finished with 21 points, six assists and three steals to lead C-SC to a win at Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Wildcats (5-2) shot 44 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers.

James Johnson finished with 20 points for C-SC and Alen Hadzimahovic added 13 points.

Southeast Missouri 96, Hannibal-LaGrange 55: Jurgen Lico led Hannibal-LaGrange with 11 points in their exhibition loss at Southeast Missouri.

Alistair McCann finished with nine points for Hannibal-LaGrange (1-5).


Culver-Stockton 62, Iowa Wesleyan 59: Lisa Plattner made a free throw with 20 seconds remaining that gave the Wildcats a 62-59 lead, and after Iowa Wesleyan missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, the win.

C-SC (4-2) forced 26 turnovers.

Plattner finished with 15 points, five assists and four steals in the win. Mimi Reaves lead C-SC with 18 points.

Randi Lee Plunkett finished with 14 points and four steals.
