Brandon Berhorst sank one of two free throws with two seconds left to give the Canton boys basketball team a 62-61 victory over Monroe City Tuesday night in Canton, Mo.
The free throw capped off a flurry of activity in the final seconds of play.
Monroe City's Kyle Fulton drilled a 3-pointer, his fourth of the quarter, with 15 seconds left to tie the game at 61.
On the next play, Berhorst grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled. He missed both free throws but was fouled again while going for the offensive rebound.
He hit the front end of a one-and-one to ice the win for the Tigers (2-0).
Canton scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters and led 40-32 at halftime.
Monroe City (0-1) was held to just five points in the first quarter but put together a 27-point effort in the second quarter.
The Tigers were led by 18 points apiece from Tyler Neimann and David McReynolds. Gabe McKenzie added 12 points.
Fulton led all scorers with 22 points. Blake Rodgers added 16 points and Grant O'Bryan chipped in 10.
Mark Twain 59, Community R-VI 51: Garrett Jarman poured in 30 points to lead the Tigers (1-1) to the home win.
The 6-foot senior hit three 3-pointers and went 11 of 12 from the free throw line for Mark Twain.
The Tigers built an 18-13 lead after the first quarter and held Community R-VI to eight points in the second to take a 30-21 halftime lead.
Marion County 43, North Shelby 36: Clay Pollard scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Mustangs (2-0) to the victory.
Pollard scored seven points in the fourth quarter on 7-of-12 shooting from the free throw line. Luke Stratton added 10 points for Marion County.
Lucas Daniel led North Shelby with 14 points.
Knox County 53, Paris 30: Donovan Edwards scored 12 points and Royce Poore added 10 to lead the Eagles (1-3) to their first win of the season. Knox County limited the Coyotes to two field goals in the first half.
Clark County 54, Schuyler County 21: A 20-point second quarter led to a win for the Indians in the Putnam County Tournament.
Chase Bevans led Clark County with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Kyle Kovar added 10 points for the Indians (2-0).
Griggsville-Perry 63, Brown County 39: A big second quarter led to the first victory of the season for the Tornadoes.
Dryden Craven and Hayden Bradshaw combined for 22 of the Tornadoes' 25 points in the second quarter as each scored 11 points.
Craven and Matthew Kennedy finished with 15 points for Griggsville, while Bradshaw added 13.
Lee Crank led Brown County (0-1) with 13 points.
West Prairie 42, Central 40: The Cyclones outscored the Panthers 13-10 in the fourth quarter to slip away with the victory.
Taylor Heimann led Central (1-5) with nine points and Austin Kramberg added eight.
Southeastern 39, Lewistown 28: The Suns scored 17 points in the second quarter while holding the Indians scoreless in the same period to claim the home victory.
Justin Hainline scored 14 points, seven apiece in the second and fourth quarters, to lead Southeastern (3-3). Matthew Ramsey added 11 points for the Suns.
North Greene 68, Pleasant Hill 27: The Wolves opened the season with a loss at home.
Pleasant Hill was held scoreless in the first quarter as North Greene built a 24-point first-quarter lead and turned it into a 38-13 halftime advantage.
Keenan Latham led the Wolves with nine points.
