DURHAM, Mo. -- Fire destroyed the home of the Aaron Johnson family mid-day Wednesday.

No one was at home at 2750 Hwy. P near the Marion-Lewis County line. The cause of the fire is undetermined but is not being considered to be of a suspicious nature, according to Terry Faulconer of the Lewis County R-4 Fire Protection District.

Lewis County R-4 arrived about 11:30 a.m. to find the back edge of the garage and front portion of the brick home ablaze. Additional help came from Marion R-II and Western Lewis County Fire Protection District. Nearly 20 firefighters were at the scene.

Relatives and friends immediately came to the aid of the family, prompting the Johnsons to decline assistance from the American Red Cross, according to a spokesman from the local Red Cross district.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly indicated that the fire was of a suspicious nature.
