BEARDSTOWN, Ill. -- With 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Havana's Jordyn Hughes drove the length of the court and made a shot as time expired to give the Lady Ducks a 40-39 victory over Illini West Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic.
"It was a questionable call," Illini West coach Grant Surprenant said. "It looked like the ball was still in her hands (when time ran out).
"But it was a back and forth game -- a fun game to be in."
Illini West trailed by as many as six during the fourth quarter, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Josie Finch and Michaela Gronewold cut the Chargers' deficit to 38-36. Graci Bastert made a free throw and then snared a steal and made a layup to put Illini West ahead 39-38.
After a timeout by Havana, Hughes went the length of the court for the basket and the win.
"We showed a lot of resiliency tonight," Surprenant said. "We fought back after getting behind and buckled down on defense. We played pretty well."
