Boys Basketball Roundup: North Shelby nips Putnam County

Kendle Smith's putback with one second left in overtime lifted the North Shelby boys basketball team to a 67-66 Tri-Rivers Conference victory over Putnam County Friday.

The Raiders (5-6) scored the first five points of overtime before Putnam County charged back to take a one-point lead with eight seconds left.

North Shelby drove the length of the court and got the ball into the post. Smith missed his first shot but got the rebound for the putback.

The game went into overtime when North Shelby rallied from a 5-point deficit to tie the game at 52 on a 3-pointer from Dylan Mettes with two minutes left to play.

The Midgets led 55-54 with two seconds left when Deion Hunt was called on a technical. North Shelby's Lucas Daniel hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 55 and send it into overtime.

Smith led North Shelby with 24 points, 16 in the second half. Daniel added 14 points and Mettes chipped in 10.

Putnam County led 33-29 at halftime and was ahead 43-38 heading into the final quarter.

Marion County 68, Novinger 44: A quick start in the first half led to an easy win for the Mustangs (7-2).

Marion County led 22-8 after the first quarter and was ahead 36-13 at halftime.

Reed Plunkett led Marion County with 16 points, while Clay Pollard and Kalin Robbearts added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Highland Tournament: Palmyra captured third place with a 52-43 victory over Clark County.

Josh Hultz led Palmyra (7-5) with 15 points. Brock Butler added 13 points.

Kyle Kovar led Clark County (5-6) with 20 points. Chase Bevans added 11 points.

South Shelby escaped with a 44-43 overtime victory over Macon in the consolation game.

Cabe Simpson made a shot just before the buzzer to lift the Cardinals to the win.
