Saturday morning accident south of Pittsfield claimed life of Jerseyville man

PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- A fatal accident involving a pedestrian early Saturday morning south of Pittsfield remains under investigation by the Pike County coroner and the Illinois State Police.

Ricky L. Swarringim, 32, of Jerseyville, died in the single vehicle accident at approximately 5:30 a.m. on County Highway 11, the Martinsburg Road.

Law enforcement officials believe Swarringim drove to Pike County in the late evening hours of Jan. 11. After arriving in the Nebo area, Swarringim saw friends, then left a residence in a white Buick car. Authorities believe he wrecked his vehicle on County Highway 11 just north of Pleasant Hill between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. Saturday. It is believed Swarringim then began to walk to Pittsfield from the accident site and actually walked approximately seven miles.

At approximately 5:28 a.m., he was struck by a vehicle heading north on County Highway 11.

Swarringham was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner. An autopsy is being scheduled in Wood River to assist in the investigation.

Assisting at the scene was Pike County EMS, Pittsfield Fire and Rescue, the Pike County Sheriff's Department, Pike County Coroner and Illinois State Police.
