To The Herald-Whig:
Gun control seems to be on everyone's mind lately, but do we really need more laws?
Enforce the laws we have! Illinois has required background checks for gun owners for nearly 45 years via FOID -- the Firearm Owners I.D. Yet Chicago has one of the highest gun-related murder rates in the country.
Is anyone really surprised that criminals don't care about obeying the law? How many of the 500 victims in Chicago do you supposed died at the hands of a FOID card holder?
I am pleased that some of our politicians are now considering the NRA's recommendation for armed guards in our schools. We know their kids are protected by armed guards at their schools. Don't our kids and grandchildren deserve the same protection?
We can do a better job of protecting our kids and preserving Constitutional rights as well simply by avoiding politics.
This is not a political problem. It's an American problem.
