Quincy's Broadway Hy-Vee will welcome a Starbucks kiosk at the front of the store in March.
"We'll probably be installing it in the entry way the last week in February and it will be completed the first week in March," said Store Director Mark Lammers.
Hy-Vee has about 80 stores with Starbucks outlets. Hy-Vee will make the investments and train a staff of about 10 to operate the unit. Starbucks will set the prices, determine the products and receive a royalty from the store.
"Starbucks is a really strong brand in Quincy," Lammers said.
The Starbucks at 3115 Broadway opened in late 2007 and has done a brisk business ever since. That store is owned by Starbucks Coffee Co., which has risen to become one of the most recognizable American business brands.
"It's not a cheap cup of coffee, but it's a great cup of coffee," Lammers said.
Lammers is a longtime customer at Starbucks in Quincy and does not believe the Hy-Vee location will affect the stand-alone shop six blocks away. Coffee drinkers go there for the atmosphere, the WiFi and the full Starbucks experience.
What Lammers wants to see at the Hy-Vee is the shopper who wants a break.
While there will be a few bistro table and chair configurations near the coffee shop, Lammers said the current seating in the cafeteria section of the store will be adequate for overflow. Checkout counters have been reconfigured to make room for the coffee operation.
In addition to coffee there will be Starbucks pastry offerings and the special cups that keep the coffee hot will be in use.
A small sign has gone up at the Broadway Hy-Vee. A large logo is planned within weeks on the outside of the building.
