ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Rock Island wrestling team made it quite clear Friday that it remains the team to beat in the Western Big Six Conference.
The Rocks beat Quincy High School 46-18 before QHS rebounded with a 65-12 win over Rock Island Alleman at Don Morris Gym.
Rocky, which won its third consecutive WB6 title, scored 19 bonus points and won nine bouts to hand the Blue Devils their first league loss.
"I'll give them credit," QHS coach Phil Neally said. "(Rocky) came out and wrestled. Congratulations to them."
QHS took advantage of six Alleman forfeits to get the comfortable win. The Pioneers won two bouts.
"Our kids did a good job of coming back from a loss," Neally said. "We'll just keep pushing."
Trevor Schutte (106 pounds), Stephen Wallace, Parker Schutte (152), Dakota Downs (170) and Jaydon Summy (195) each won two bouts for the Blue Devils. Downs knocked off sixth-ranked Rock Island senior Michael Cole by major decision and earned a 3-1 win over third-ranked Alleman senior Sean Wetherell.
Both Wetherell and Cole were ranked in the latest Illinois Best Weekly Class 1A and 2A polls, respectively.
"Dakota is our tough kids," Neally said. "He's who everybody looks at for leadership. I hope these other kids see how hard he works and the other things he does. He puts our program on the map. That's been a good thing for us."
QHS closes the regular season with WB6 duals against East Moline and Moline on Saturday morning in Galesburg.
