Area Roundup: QHS wrestlers come up short of second place

The Quincy High School wrestling team fell just short of second place in the Western Big Six Conference Saturday, placing third.

The Blue Devils held a 32-26 lead with two weight classes remaining before Moline used two pins to win 38-32.

Eddie Perez pinned Damon Gibson at 220 pounds to tie the match and Adarios Jones gave Moline (4-1) the win with a pin of David Baze.

Both schools lost to Rock Island, which clinched its third consecutive WB6 title by beating the Blue Devils 46-18 Friday night in Rock Island.

The Blue Devils used wins from Trevor Schutte (106 pounds), Garrad Straube (120), Conner Emrick (132), Matt Bilgri (145), Parker Schutte (152), Dakota Downs (170) and Jaydon Summy (195) to build their lead.

Quincy (3-2) opened Saturday by beating United Township 56-23 to set up a second-place showdown with Moline.

Schutte, Straube, Emrick, Bilgri, Downs, Summy and Baze all won against the Panthers.

Hannibal 49, Marshall 21: The Pirates won nine bouts on the way to an impressive victory over the Owls.

Kyle Muehring (220) scored a pin in just 1 minute, 30 seconds. Brant Dooley (182) added a pin in 4:27 while Eli Ratliff (145) pinned his opponent in 5:31.

Chandler Fohey (113) added a technical fall victory by a score of 20-4, as did Colby Collings (152) by a margin of 15-0. Austin Janes (106), Tyler Leake (120), and Tyler Janes (132) all added forfeit victories.


Central-Southeastern 63, Griggsville-Perry 23: Madison Steinkamp, Torie Conover and Maddie Ramsey combined for 38 points to lead the Lady Panthers to the home victory.

Steinkamp scored 14 points, Conover added 13 and Ramsey chipped in 11 for C-SE (11-13).

Mikayla Smith led all scorers with 18 points to led the Lady Tornadoes (2-21).

West Hancock 60, Western 32: The Titans never left any doubt, taking a 28-15 lead by halftime and cruising down the stretch for the victory.

Allison Dewald led all scorers with 18 points and Shelby Koehler added 14 for West Hancock (11-12).

Rachel Motley led Western (9-14) with 14 points.

Illini West 47, Orion 43: Graci Bastert led a furious third-quarter comeback that helped her team pull out the key conference win.

Illini West (16-10) trailed 21-13 at hafltime, but used 21 points in the third to enter the final quarter all tied up. Bastert scored 11 of the team's points in the quarter. Holly McDowell had a huge play to end the run, stealing the ball with less than five seconds left and putting in the layup to ensure a clean slate heading into the fourth.

The Chargers used solid defense and clutch shooting from the charity stripe to secure the victory against conference foe Orion (18-8).

Liberty-Payson 64, West Prairie 41: Freshman Madelyn Hyer scored 23 points, including two 3-pointers, to lead the Eagles (15-10) to the victory.

Ashlyn May added 10 points for Liberty and Kristen Loos chipped in 10 points with two threes.


Winfield 55, Louisiana 43: Brendan Ross scored 17 points in a losing effort as the sixth-seeded Bulldogs lost to top-ranked Winfield in the championship game of the Bowling Green Tournament.

Louisiana drops to 11-7 with the loss.

Petersburg Porta 50, Central 43: The Panthers let a five-point halftime lead slip away en route to the road loss.

Marcus Landes scored 17 points to lead C-SE and Douglas Weese added seven points for the Panthers (9-14).
