Scouting the Saints: Gerald Shaw scored 16 points to lead Maryville past Illinois-Springfield 70-52 on Saturday. It was Maryville's sixth win in its last seven games.
Asa Toney, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, leads Maryville in scoring (14.8 points per game), assists (four per game) and rebounds (4.7 per game). Armon Provo, a 6-1 sophomore guard, is supplying 12.9 points per game. Shaw, a 6-3 senior guard, is averaging 11 points per game.
Maryville ranks 15th in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in scoring (66.5 points per game) but second in scoring defense (62.5 ppg). Maryville has limited four of its last five opponents to fewer than 58 points.
Big man exits: QU's 6-foot-10 sophomore center Drake Vermillion quit the team prior to the Hawks' 69-55 loss at Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday. Vermillion signed with QU out of Beardstown, where he was a fourth-team Illinois Basketball Coaches Association all-state selection as a junior, when he averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game. Vermillion started four of QU's first five games but appeared in just one game after that, playing three minutes in the Hawks' 93-58 win over Robert Morris-Springfield on Dec. 30. He averaged 2.2 points and one rebound per game.
