College Roundup: HLGU women gets support from bench in victory

Despite playing without leading scorer Ashleigh Spencer, the Hannibal-LaGrange University's women's basketball team defeated Benedictine-Springfield 56-38 Saturday in Springfield, Ill.

With Spencer sidelined due to injury, Maddy Cunningham and Juliana Lopes Roberto stepped up for the Trojans. Cunningham scored 12 points off the bench while Lopes Roberto finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

HLGU improves to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in the American Midwest Conference while Benedictine-Springfield drops to 3-17, 0-10. The victory also ends a three-game losing skid.

HLGU held the Lady Bulldogs to 23.3 percent shooting from the field while hitting 36.8 percent of its shots.

Culver-Stockton 76, Peru State 71: The Wildcats rallied from an 18-point deficit in the final seven minutes, 22 seconds of the game en route to the Heart of America Athletic Conference win.

Trailing 65-47 with 7:22 left, the Wildcats scored 12 straight points to pull within 65-59. During that stretch, Kati Davis scored three straight layups for C-SC (11-11, 6-6).

After a basket by Peru State, C-SC scored four points to pull within 67-65 at the 2:30 mark.

Two free throws gave the Bobcats a 69-63 lead, but C-SC went on a 7-0 run to take a 70-68 lead with 1:09 to play. Two free throws by Aduago Osuala put Peru State back on top, but Mimi Reaves split a pair of free throws with 55 seconds left to tie the game at 71.

Reaves' hit an open 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to put C-SC in front 74-71 and Davis sealed the win with a layup with 15 seconds left.

Reaves scored a game-high 25 points and Randi Lee Plunkett and Davis scored 14 points apiece.

Lewis & Clark 74, John Wood 63: Kriza Allen's 26-point effort wasn't enough to help the Blazers as they lost in Godfrey, Ill. JWCC drops to 12-10 overall and 3-2 in the MidWest Athletic Conference.

Lewis & Clark opened the game on a 15-0 run en route to a 35-25 halftime lead.


Hannibal-LaGrange 55, Benedictine-Springfield 51: Mario Dean and Jurgen Lico scored 15 points apiece to help the Trojans to their first conference win.

HLGU (4-17, 1-8 AMC) shot 40.4 percent from the field to pick up its first victory since Dec. 8.

Alistair McCann added nine points and three assists.

JWCC 76, Illinois Central 57: The Blazers held the Cougars to 32 percent shooting from the field en route to the victory in East Peoria, Ill.


IPFW d. QU: Quincy University lost in four sets at Fort Wayne, Ind., falling 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 25-15.

Jack Gamache had 15 kills and three blocks for QU (4-5, 0-2 MIVA). Brian Peth and Steven Battaglia added seven kills each.

Chris Lynch doled out 34 assists for the Hawks.


Wildcats drop two: Culver-Stockton suffered losses to nationally-ranked Oklahoma City and Doane in Oklahoma City.

In the first game, the Wildcats were shut out for the second straight game in a 5-0 loss to Oklahoma City.

Craig Bastert struck out five and allowed three hits while pitching five innings to take the loss.

C-SC (0-3) managed three hits with Jason Schwartz collecting two, including a double.

In the second game, Doane broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to keep the Wildcats winless with an 8-6 victory.

Cody Jacobson, Andrew Quiles, Danny Carroll and Nate Olin all had two hits for C-SC. Jacobson added three RBIs.
