Girls basketball roundup: C-SE upends Liberty in regional semis

The Central-Southeastern girls basketball team buckled down defensively and saved its season.

The third-seeded Lady Panthers trailed second-seeded Liberty-Payson at halftime of the Class 2A Liberty Regional semifinal before limiting the Lady Eagles to just four points in the third quarter. It allowed C-SE to build a seven-point lead and hold on for a 38-33 victory.

C-SE lost to Liberty 53-30 earlier in the season.

The Lady Panthers (13-14) advance to face top-seeded Pittsfield in Thursday's regional championship. The Lady Saukees beat fourth-seeded Beardstown 40-29 in the other semifinal.

Dakota Limkemann led C-SE with 13 points, while Lanessa Graham led Liberty (15-12) with 11 points.

Pittsfield limited Beardstown to 13 second-half points, while Shea O'Brien led the Lady Saukees with 20 points. Alyssa Heavner added 11 points.

Class 2A Macomb Regional: West Hancock was able to put pressure on top-seeded Havana in the closing minutes, but the Titans could never get over the hump on a 57-50 loss.

The Titans cut a nine-point third quarter deficit to a single point with 90 seconds left, but the Ducks never gave up the lead. Madison Harmon led West Hancock (16-14) with 14 points.

QND 85, Keokuk 38: The Lady Raiders soared to a 30-8 lead after the first quarter and were never threatened.

Kassidy Gengenbacher led the Lady Raiders (22-0) with a game-high 22 points, while Jordan Frericks finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mary Beth Hugenberg added 15 points for QND.

Monroe City 55, Highland 31: Kiette Mundy tallied 17 points and Leah Albus added 15 to spark the Lady Panthers to the Clarence Cannon Conference victory.

Monroe City (19-3, 5-1 CCC) jumped out to an eight-point lead after one quarter and was ahead by 14 at halftime.

Palmyra 71, Louisiana 19: The Lady Panthers scored 37 points in the first half and never worried.

Katee Hinkle led the Lady Panthers with a game high 16 points while Alexis Losson added 14. Caitlin Bolton led Louisiana (9-12) with six points.

Scotland County 38, Canton 18: Megan Creek scored 10 points as Scotland County rolled to the non-conference victory. Courtney Baalman led Canton with 12 points.

Mark Twain 50, Clark County 34: Kyley Barnes finished with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Mark Twain to the Clarence Cannon Conference victory.

The Lady Tigers held the Lady Indians to just 12 points in the second half.

Mackenzie Grossman had 12 points and seven blocks for Mark Twain, while Mishaylee Cline led Clark County with 12 points.

Marion County 67, Novinger 35: Kaelyn Spratt had 19 points as the Lady Mustangs roared past Novinger in the Brashear Tournament. Marion County (14-7) opened up a 21-2 lead in the opening quarter and increased it to 38-9 at halftime.

Danielle Maxwell added 13 points and Devan Johnson had 10 for Marion County.
