NAUVOO, Ill. -- Carol Zumdome loves to shop at bulk food stores, but that means taking a trip out of town.

Now she's bringing the opportunity, and putting her own experience to use, close to home.

Baxter's Vineyards and Carol's Pies in Nauvoo have added a new line of bulk foods and kitchen wares.

The Nauvoo Nibbles product line includes breadmaking supplies, spices, soup mixes, dip mixes and snack foods along with kitchen equipment.

"Bulk food is really good quality. You get good quality food for a little less money without the fancy packaging," Zumdome, who owns the pie and bulk foods businesses, said. "It's a more natural, more pure way of cooking food without preservatives."

Zumdome, for example, packages a brownie mix from the bulk products.

"You know what's in there. It's not unnamed stuff in boxes. It's more natural," she said.

With the addition of the new product line, "we're hoping to get a little more winter foot traffic" to the winery, Zumdome said, while making bulk products available again in Nauvoo. "The closest bulk store is about 125 miles round trip from here."

Pair-A-Bowls Kitchen Store, Nauvoo's previous bulk food supplier, closed in October after owners Bob and Christie Northrup relocated to Nevada due to a family situation.

Zumdome and her sister, Brenda Logan with the winery, talked years ago about adding a bulk food product line to the jams and jellies they already offered but didn't pursue the idea.

With the kitchen store closing, "we thought we'd give it a shot," Zumdome said. "It's a lot of learning for me, but we're getting there. It's pretty interesting."

Nauvoo Nibbles, at Baxter's Vineyards and Winery, will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Soups, hot beverages, fresh breads and other items will be available to sample from the bulk food and kitchen ware line of products. Recipes and suggestions also will be available for customers.
