Boys basketball roundup: Hildebrand, Buhlig carry Payson

Griggsville Perry couldn't handle the one-two punch of Cody Hildebrand and Lance Buhlig.

The Payson Seymour boys basketball duo combined for 50 points in the Indians' 72-64 victory Friday night in Griggsville, Ill.

Most of the combo's damage came at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter as the two combined to make 16 of 18 from the charity stripe.

Hildebrand finished with 28 points for Payson and Buhlig added 22.

Tied at 31 at halftime, Griggsville-Perry outscored Payson 14-10 in the third quarter to take a 35-31 lead heading into the final period. The Indians scored 31 points in the final quarter to take command.

Levi King led the Tornadoes in scoring with 23 points. Dryden Craven added 14 points for Griggsville-Perry while Wyatt Kennedy and Hayden Bradshaw added 12 and 11, respectively.

West Hancock 50, Southeastern 20: The Titans held the Suns scoreless in the first quarter and built a 22-7 lead at halftime to pick up the road win.

Paxton Harmon scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, and Parker Gibbs added 10 for West Hancock.

Matthew Ramsey led Southeastern with eight points and Shea Flesner added seven.

Pittsfield 41, Western 29: Western entered the final quarter in a 27-27 tie, but the offense sputtered down the stretch as Pittsfield pulled away for the victory.

Wayde Smith led all scorers with 17 points, and Ethan Borrowman added 11 points for the Saukees. Kyle Warning was the only Wildcat to reach double digits in scoring with his 10 points.

Palmyra 64, Clark County 56: Trevor Meny poured in 21 points to lead the Panthers to a Clarence Cannon Conference victory.

Will Funkenbush added 12 for Palmyra.

Kyle Kovar led Clark County (9-13) with 19 points.

Liberty 58, Knox County 48: Liberty found itself facing a 16-10 deficit at the end of the first quarter but rallied by outscoring Knox County 18-6 in the second quarter to take control.

Once in control, Liberty never relented. Michael Blewett scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half, and Michael Mast added nine of his 13 points after halftime.

Isaac Murfin chipped in 11 points for Liberty.

Royce Poore led Knox County with 12 points. Kellen Gillaspy and Lee Tague added 10 points each.

Louisiana 81, Brookfield 58: Louisiana poured in 23 points in the first quarter, tacked on 17 in the second and never looked back en route to the victory.

Tristan Castiglia led Louisiana with 14 points, and Brendan Ross chipped in 13.

Canton 72, Schuyler County 34: Brandon Berhorst scored 14 points, and Geordan Hausdorf added 13 as the Tigers rolled to victory.

Canton improved to 22-1 and Schuyler County dropped to 2-17.

Canton turned a 19-8 lead after the first quarter into a 47-10 halftime lead.

Sherrard 71, Illini West 70: Levi Kirby hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the Chargers ahead 70-69, but Sherrard scored on a putback with 2.5 seconds left to claim the West Central Conference North Division the win.

Brody Gronewold led the Chargers (14-11) with 24 points. Kirby and Nolan Ard added 13 apiece.

Centralia 55, Monroe City 47: Monroe City stayed within reach, trailing 36-34 heading into the fourth quarter, but Centralia outscored Monroe City 19-13 in the final period to take the CCC win.

Kyle Fulton led Monroe City with 13 points, and Grant O'Bryan added 11.

Macon 67, Mark Twain 64: Macon scored 29 points in the fourth quarter and overcame Mark Twain's 13-point lead with three minutes to play en route to the CCC win.

Macon's Tyrone Walker hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to three and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Garret Jarman scored a game-high 30 points for Mark Twain. Ethan Anderson added 18 points.
