In a way, Dave Musso is bringing 11 new players into the Quincy University women's soccer program.

Not only did Musso, who has been at the helm for seven seasons, recruit a deep, six-player class built around defense, but the Lady Hawks will get five players back who missed the 2012 season after undergoing knee surgery. That group includes fifth-year senior Sam Martinez, who was an all-region performer in 2011.

"This group will create a much needed depth to each position for our talented returning group," said Musso, who led the Lady Hawks to the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships.

Highlighting the recruiting class is forward Caroline Basler of St. Pius X High School. Basler is a two-time all-state selection who was named the 2012 Southeast Region Offensive Player of the Year after leading St. Pius X to the state championship. She has 77 goals and 28 assists in her career and is a three-sport athlete.

Meanwhile, the depth of the class is in the back.

The Lady Hawks recruited two goalies -- Krystal Felderman of Cary, Ill., and Olivia Cain of Rockford, Ill. -- and two defenders -- Katie Hopkins of St. Louis Visitation and Maddy Kuhlenberg of St. Louis Incarnate Word.

Hopkins was a second-team all-state selection last spring after Visitation won back-to-back state titles. Kuhlenberg was an all-conference pick as a junior, whose sister, Natalie, is a QU sophomore.

QU completed the class with midfielder Gabby Herrick, who was an all-conference selection last spring for Eureka, Mo.

The Lady Hawks will welcome back midfielder Natalie Kuhlenberg, sophomore defender Brittney Kuster, freshmen defender Brianna Andert and freshman midfielder Morgan Roberts from injuries.
