Missouri girls district preview capsules

Here is a Missouri district-by-district preview of the postseason for area girls basketball teams:


Class 3 District 7

The Pairings

Tuesday, Feb. 19

No. 1 Bowling Green vs. No. 8 Mark Twain, 4:30 p.m.

No. 2 Monroe City vs. No. 7 Clark County, 8:30 p.m.

No. 3 Palmyra vs. No. 6 Highland, 7:10 p.m.

No. 4 Macon vs. No. 5 Brookfield, 5:50 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 21

Bowling Green/Mark Twain winner vs. Macon/Brookfield winner, 6 p.m.

Highland/Palmyra winner vs. Monroe City/Clark County winner, 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 23

The Breakdown

º Bowling Green (18-5) -- Kelsey Scherder leads a scrappy Bobcats team with 10.9 points per game. The Bobcats own wins over both Palmyra (59-37) and Monroe City (42-28).

º Monroe City (20-5) -- The Lady Panthers head into the playoffs dealing with some injury issues. Carly Spalding, who leads the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game, was forced to miss Monroe City's regular season finale with an injured knee.

ºPalmyra (20-5) -- The Lady Panthers went 9-0 in Clarence Cannon Conference play to capture their second consecutive title. Junior Katee Hinkle leads the team with 12.1 points per game, while Megan Hooper (8.6 points per game), Alex Van Nostrand (8.8) and Lexie Losson (8.3) provide some punch on offense.

º Clark County (10-13) -- Junior Mishaylee Cline has provided the Lady Indians with steady offense this season. Five-foot-9 junior Kailey Roberts will also contribute underneath.

º Highland (6-17) -- Finding scoring has been tough for the Cougars. Highland scores a little over 33 points per game and doesn't have any players who average more than seven points per game. Ashlynn Lay leads Highland with 6.8 points per game.

º Mark Twain (7-17) -- The Tigers have struggled to score this season, averaging 33 points per game. Junior Mackenzie Grossmann averages 11.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

No. 1 Silex vs. No. 8 Van-Far, 7:30 p.m.

The Breakdown

º Silex (21-1) -- Natalie Fleming, who committed to the University of Missouri to play softball, leads an energetic Owls' team that averages 58 points per game. Fleming averages 20.9 points and 11 rebounds per game.

º Clopton (14-8) -- Shelby Dunn has provided the Hawks with solid guard play, averaging 15 points per game for a team that prefers to grind it out. Clopton averages 48 points per game.

º Paris (15-9) -- Senior forward Haley Fredrick, who averages 6.2 rebounds, does the work inside, while senior guard Payton Gruber, who averages 17.9 points, does most of the scoring.

º Louisiana (9-14) -- While the Bulldogs defense averages 10.3 steals per game, their offense struggles to score. Louisiana scores 36.8 points per game.

º South Shelby (5-20) -- Cassidy Johnston averages 18.1 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Lady Birds, but South Shelby hasn't been able to finish games.

º Wellsville (3-15) -- Jordan Kellogg is the Tigers' leading scorer, averaging nearly seven points per game.

º Canton (3-20) -- The Tigers stumbled to an 0-12 start and haven't found a rhythm. Brittney Berhorst, Courtney Baalman and Kailee Gaither will all play a role for Canton.

º Van-Far (2-21) -- Generating offense has been a struggle for the Indians this season. Van-Far averages 21 points per game.

º Marceline (18-3) -- The Tigers have had a turnaround season led by six seniors.

º Schuyler County (12-9) -- Junior Caley Sessions leads the Lady Rams by averaging more than 10 points per game.

º Scotland County (14-5) -- Seniors Bethany Rader and Megan Creek lead a Lady Tigers squad that has been ranked as high as No. 8 in Class to this season.

º Knox County (12-7) -- After losing 5-10 senior guard Hannah Strange to a torn ACL early in the season, Knox County has rallied behind sophomore Lauren Dale and junior Sarah Dooley.

º Milan (11-10) -- The defending district champions are led by senior point guard Hannah Sanders and senior forward Andra Sylvester.

º Cairo (17-6) -- Freshman Marley Winkler helped lead the Bearcats to a 7-3 mark in the Central Activities Conference.

º Putnam County (11-12) -- The Midgets have struggled since losing senior Samantha Shipley to an ACL tear.

º Westran (1-19) -- The Hornets finished 0-8 in the Lewis and Clark Conference, although freshman Kyle Linneman has provided a bright spot.

The Breakdown

º Marion County (16-8) -- The Lady Mustangs are led by Kaelyn Spratt, who is averaging close to 17 points per game. Devan Johnson has stepped up as a interior player and leads the team with nine rebounds per game.

º North Shelby (11-12) -- Elizabeth Linberger and Brianna Cochenour lead the Lady Raiders.

º La Plata (12-8) -- Senior forward Makay Belt and senior guard Taylor Snodgrass lead a young La Plata team that features six freshman.

º Macon County (11-7) -- The Raiders tied La Plata for the Tri-County Conference title with a 6-1 record. Macon County is led by 5-foot-10 senior center Emily Timmerman.

º Atlanta (11-14) -- A year after only having six players, the Lady Hornets have a deeper roster. Junior forward Ashton Ross and senior point Samantha Reed have led the turnaround for Atlanta.

º Bevier (7-15) -- Beth Ashenfelter, Taylor Hedworth and Memphis Buster lead a Wildcats team that has struggled to a 3-4 record in the Tri-County conference.

º Madison (3-15) -- The Panthers have struggled to a winless record in the Central Conference.

º Brashear (4-15) -- Junior guard Meredith Thomas and senior forward Shelby Salter lead an undersized Brashear team.
