QND places 1st, QHS 3rd in Masonic Academic Bowl sectionals

Quincy Notre Dame High School's scholastic bowl team finished first in an eight-team sectional tournament Saturday and will advance to the Illinois Masonic Academic Bowl's Class A state tournament March 2 in Springfield.

QND competed at the Unity High School sectional in Mendon and won a $400 prize in addition to its first-place trophy. Unity finished second in the sectional, while Pleasant Hill placed third and Western High School fourth.

QND will be one of 18 teams competing in the Class A state Masonic tournament, which will take place at Springfield High School, also the site of the Class AA state tournament March 2 featuring 12 teams.

Competing for QND are Steven Musholt, Eric Eling, Nick Scholz, Gibson Brinkley, Gabe Hun and Sarah Meidl. QND's coach is Susan Schmitz.

Meanwhile, Quincy High School finished third Saturday in a 10-team Class AA Masonic Academic Bowl sectional at Glenwood High School in Chatham. Only the first-place team, Springfield High School, will advance to the state tournament. Glenwood High School placed second and Jacksonville fourth.

QHS won a $200 prize for placing third.

Competing for QHS were Caleb Fischer, Kathryn Williams, Max Matson, Sean McClean, Chase Crossan, Ameena Chaudhry, Sage Meleney, Lance Heady, Dalton Crowe and Antonio Fernandez. QHS's coach is Kay Dyer.
