HANNIBAL Mo. -- The Hannibal City Council approved a plan Tuesday to dredge 5,000 cubic yards of the Nipper Park Marina.
Andy Dorian, Hannibal Parks and Recreation director, proposed dredging 3,000 cubic yards on the marina's slips and 2,000 yards on the south side of the marina. IWS Dredging has bid the project at $81,250. Dorian had originally opened a bid for the company to dredge 8,000 cubic yards of the marina for $108,720. He said that was more money than he was comfortable spending.
"Five thousand cubic yards will more than adequately do what we need it to do," Dorian said.
The council also approved a resolution to continue allowing citizens to pay for city fees using a credit or debit card. Collector Phyllis Nelson said the city had provided these services when F & M Bank was the city's depository. A new contract was needed because the city switched to US Bank in November.
"It does seem to be convenient for the public, and we'd like to continue it," Nelson said.
Nelson said that this contract could be reviewed at any time. The service could be discontinued if it becomes cost prohibitive for the city.
Mayor Roy Hark read a proclamation honoring Cindy Lovell, who recently resigned as executive director of Hannibal's Mark Twain Boyhood Home. Lovell will leave Hannibal in early March for a position at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Conn. Lovell said that she was sad to leave Hannibal, and that she hopes to return and retire in America's Hometown.
"I really love this town so much," Lovell said. "I'm just going to have a different address for awhile."
Hark also gave Lovell a key to the city. He said the town would always welcome her back if she wanted to return.
