23rd season of Academic Challenge begins Saturday

John Wood Community College and WGEM will launch the 23rd season of the Academic Challenge Quiz Bowl Tournament on Saturday with the competition's first match between Quincy Notre Dame High School and Camp Point Central High School.

The show airs at 6:30 p.m. on WGEM NBC. The match will be rebroadcast at 5:30 p.m. Sunday on WGEM FOX.

The WGEM Academic Challenge features 16 schools from the bi-state region competing in 15 matches. Six contests will be broadcast, including the championship match.

Members of the Quincy Notre Dame team are Gibson Brinkley, Eric Eling, Gabe Hun, Miranda Mefford, Sarah Meidl, Steven Musholt, Nick Scholz and Justin Terwelp. The team is coached by Susan Schmitz.

Members of the Camp Point team are John Aden, Logan Ayers, Aaron DeRousse, Emery Gronewold, Anthony Holtschlag, Lucas Johnson, Tanner Kennedy and Kelli Zimmerman. The team is coached by Sarah Triplett.

Judges for the 2013 challenge include JWCC faculty members Melissa Knapp, mathematics instructor; Mark Moore, professor of natural sciences; and Dr. David Shinn, dean of transfer education. The series is under the direction of Shawn Dickerman, creative services manager at WGEM.
