PITTSFIELD, Ill. -- The Pike County Historical Society is looking for family histories and photographs to include in the Pike County Family History Book.
Submissions will be accepted through April 30.
"There is not a similar record already made," Noue Filbert, who serves on the society's board, said. "It allows people to put things in their own voice, unlike a book that somebody else writes about the county."
Family histories of up to 500 words and an accompanying photo will be included at no charge in the book; there is a charge for an additional photo and for submissions of more than 500 words.
"It's only going to be as good as the number of people who contribute," Filbert said. "We know a lot of people think it's difficult, but 500 words is not that much. There's all kinds of ways to approach it."
Filbert stressed that county residents past and present are welcome to submit a family history.
"You don't have to have arrived in Pike County in 1850 to be in it," she said. "You could have come in 1950 or 2005."
Filbert said she's already received phone calls from across the country from people interested in the project. Several area counties have published similar books.
Acclaim Press will publish the coffee-table style, hardbound book.
"The historical society sells many books already," Filbert said. "One way we fund ourselves is through sales of books. This will add to that."
Family histories and a historic or recent photo for the new Pike County Family History Book may be submitted by mail to P.O. Box 44, Pittsfield, IL 62363, dropped off at 415 E. Perry in Pittsfield and sent online at pikecoilhistory.org.
