KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Quincy University baseball team moved into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division on Saturday.
The Hawks swept a GLVC doubleheader, beating Rockhurst 10-1 and 5-2 in Kansas City, Mo.
QU has won 12 of their last 15 games to improve to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the GLVC. Rockhurst fell to 10-10 and 5-7.
Maryville and Drury had been tied with QU for first, but those teams split a doubleheader against each other Saturday.
QU struck early in the opener, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Kenny May and Joe Williams started the rally with singles, and Nick Tindall had a sacrifice fly. Ryan Richardson and Peter Cunningham added RBI hits for QU.
The Hawks, who collected 17 hits, tacked on two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Williams and Drake Austin had run-scoring hits in the fourth, Williams and Mitchell Broughton drove in runs in the fifth and Larry Sartin and May had RBI singles in the sixth.
Charlie Kapala threw a complete game, giving up one run on four hits. Kapala struck out four and walked one in seven innings of work.
Adam Hightower had four hits for QU and May added three.
Rockhurst took a 2-0 lead in the nightcap before QU went to work.
Quincy scored three runs in the fourth inning. Williams scored on a sacrifice fly by Broughton, and Richardson scored on an RBI double by Cunningham. QU added two more runs in the fifth when May scored on a double by Broughton, who later scored on a two-out triple by Austin.
May and Austin were the only QU players with two hits in the game. Both teams finished with eight hits.
Ryan Wilkinson pitched five-plus innings to take the win and improve to 2-0. Wilkinson struck out one, walked four and gave up four hits.
