Louisiana, Palmyra win boys golf district titles

The Palmyra and Louisiana boys golf teams won district tournaments Monday to advance to sectionals.

Each of the Panthers' five golfers placed in the top 15 -- led by medalist Hunter Baggett's 11-over 81 -- as Palmyra won the Class 2 District 3 tournament at Innsbrook Resort Golf Course in Wright City, Mo., with a 353. Palmyra's Blake Hubbert shot a 88, Trevor DeHaan had a 90, Taylor Leftwich scored a 94 and Mitchell Sutter carded a 98.

Also at the tournament, Chase Wilson led Highland with a 92, and Grant O'Bryan paced Monroe City at 98.

Louisiana placed the top four individuals while winning the Class 1 District 3 tournament at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Mo., with a 333. Second-place Fayette shot a 394.

Brendan Ross and Dylan of Louisiana tied for medalist honors as both shot 10-over-par 82. Gregory Pitzer placed third, one stroke behind his teammates. Dallas Castagna of Louisiana placed fourth with a 14-over 86.

Three area golfers qualified as individuals at the Class 1 District 4 tournament at Kirksville Country Club in Kirksville, Mo. The top performer of those three was Canton's Zach Dye, who placed 16th overall with a 25-over 96. Josh Ridgely of South Shelby shot 100 and Brice Cowell of Scotland County shot 102.

Marceline and Salisbury qualified for next week's sectional, shooting a 350 and 362, respectively. La Plata's Grant Gregory took medalist honors with an 82.

Cooper, a golden doodle, is teacher Erin Armbruster's trained therapy dog, and his pawprints reach beyond just her classroom. "He helps out the students. He's a very good dog," fifth-grader Myles Cain said.
