Dustin Lane, "pit master" for the "2 Smoked Johnsons & Jeff" barbecue team, samples a slice of pork butt shortly before the meat was judged during the Smoke on the River event Saturday afternoon at Kesler Park. Lane and teammates Jeff Johnson and Jeff Weisenburg were one of several teams that cooked overnight, preparing entrees for the Saturday afternoon judging. The Quincy Exchange Club sponsored the event. Overall winner was Gilly's BBQ of Taylorville, Mo. Second place went to Smoking Hills of Overland Park, Kan. Third place went to Shake and Bake BBQ.

Tony Baker recently watched a video of the 1991 Class A state championship game with his 11-year-old daughter. It had been several years since Baker, an all-stater as a senior at Pittsfield High School, had seen the game. "I sure was awful skinny, and those shorts were awful short," he said with a laugh. "But it was neat to watch. It's kind of a blur, but I can remember plays that were called in every game. It's so surreal."
