Football Roundup: Monroe City scrambles to CCC road win

The fourth quarter was worth the wait Friday night in Ewing, Mo.

The Monroe City and Highland football teams combined for four scores in the final 12 minutes with the Panthers scoring off a botched field goal attempt to win 18-12.

Tied at 12 after Highland scored on Cody Wilkens' pass to Laine Sly with a 57 seconds remaining, Monroe City quickly moved into field goal position.

However, the snap on the field goal attempt was off the mark and Kyle Fulton scrambled for a 10-yard touchdown and the victory.

"It was a slugfest for the last 10 minutes," Monroe City coach David Kirby.

Monroe City (3-5) finished with 203 yards rushing as Tariq Garner had 126 yards rushing on 13 carries and one touchdown.

Palmyra 56, Mark Twain 0: Brock Butler and Caleb Kizer scored three touchdowns apiece as the Panthers rumbled to a 49-0 halftime lead.

Butler scored on runs of seven, 37 and 38 yards and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Mason Franklin.

Kizer had touchdown runs of 2, 5 and 2 yards.

Palmyra churned out 382 yards rushing, led by Butler's 160-yard effort.

Tyler Elledge led Mark Twain with 23 yards rushing. Derrick Boyd had 20 yards receiving.

South Shelby 35, Clark County 7: Brett Threlkeld threw touchdown passes to Adam Ellyson (24 yards) and Austin Durbin (52 yards), while also scoring on an 84-yard run of his own.

Threlkeld finished 6-of-16 passing for 170 yards and had 16 carries for 97 yards.

Trevor Windsor scored in the second quarter for the Cardinals (4-4) and Trace Windsor scored on a 67-yard run in the third quarter.

South Shelby rolled up 292 yards rushing and 462 yards of total offense.

Durbin finished with 120 yards receiving.

Cole Birky scored Clark County's lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Putnam County 20, Scotland County 14: Will McRobert had 28 carries for 250 yards and a touchdown, but Scotland County couldn't muster enough to win.

McRobert scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter, but Scotland County (4-4) didn't score again until the third quarter when Chris Jackson connected with Jade Holt on a 34-yard pass on the first drive of the second half.

Scotland County committed four turnovers, three coming in the red zone.

Milan 42, North Shelby 8: The Wildcats did all of their damage before halftime. The Raiders' lone score came in the fourth quarter when Jacob Rich connected on a 20-yard pass to John Arnett for a score.

Milan racked up 338 yards total offense compared to 164 for North Shelby.

Centralia 55, Louisiana 22: The Bulldogs dropped to 1-7 after suffering a home loss.

Lane Rule scored on a 28-yard run and Cody Brown added a 3-yard touchdown score for Louisiana. The only other score for Louisiana came on a 45-yard pass from Zach Richardson to Tristan Castiglia.

Brown County 54, Calhoun 28: Nathan Mekdara and Braxton Phelps had two scores apiece to help the Hornets to the home victory.

Mekdara scored once in each of the first two quarters before Phelps scored his two touchdowns just three minutes apart on runs of 10 and 5 yards.

Brown County racked up 328 yards rushing. Phelps had six carries for 46 yards and Brady Long had four carries for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Chillicothe IVC 40, Illini West 12: Austin Curfman had 95 yards rushing and 47 yards receiving but the Chargers suffered a West Central Conference loss at home.

Nolan Ard scored on an 8-yard run at the 8:12 mark in the first quarter for Illini West. Curfman also had a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
