Emerson School could be rezoned for multifamily uses if the Quincy City Council agrees with action taken Wednesday night by the Quincy Plan Commission.
Richard and Felicia Powell of Las Vegas have asked for a zoning change from two-family residential to multi-family residential for the property at 1310 Washington. If granted, the Powells plan to put eight apartments in the building which was previously used by the Quincy Park District for administrative offices.
"There were neighbors there from the Emerson neighborhood, but none of them spoke," said Chuck Bevelheimer, director of the Department of Planning and Development.
Two other zoning change requests also were endorsed by the Plan Commission.
Bill Schlipman is seeking multi-family residential zoning at 2415 Larch Road to replace the current light industrial zoning. There is a single-family residence on the 1.2-acre property. A trailer park and other homes also are located nearby.
Commissioners also endorsed a request for multi-family residential zoning at 1030 North Fifth Street. The 1.33-acre tract is owned by the city and the zoning change would make it consistent with nearby property.
"We had one neighbor who was concerned about multi-family zoning," Bevelheimer said.
"We're seeking the multi-family zoning to be consistent with surrounding property. We don't want this to be spot zoning, but it is our intent to sell those four lots for single-family uses" which would be allowed in that zoning.
Commission members also endorsed a special permit for a second ground sign/electronic message board for Bank of Quincy at 1132 Broadway.
The Quincy City Council will consider the commission recommendations next Monday night.
