Two Ohio residents were arrested about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after Illinois State Police troopers seized 27 pounds of high-grade cannabis during a traffic stop on Interstate 72 in Scott County.
Cheryl E. Tucker, 57, of Columbus, Ohio, and Candi L. Mathias, 48, of Marengo, Ohio, were arrested and charged with cannabis trafficking, possession of cannabis more than 5,000 grams and manufacture/delivery of cannabis more than 5,000 grams.
According to a news release from the Illinois State Police, troopers stopped a car heading east on Interstate 72 near milepost 49 in Scott County for speeding. Troopers called in a K-9 unit to check the vehicle, and the dog alerted to the odor of narcotics. A search of the vehicle revealed two duffel bags filled with cannabis.
Police said the drugs were being smuggled from Los Angeles to Columbus, Ohio. The cannabis had a street value of $306,000.
Tucker and Mathias both were lodged at the Pike County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the West Central Illinois Task Force, the Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center, and the Scott County state's attorney's office assisted.
