LEWISTOWN, Mo. — A Hannibal woman died Monday of injuries suffered as a passenger during a two-car accident Sunday afternoon on Mo. 6 a mile west of Lewistown. Three other people were hurt, two seriously.
Miranda M. Martin, 18, died at 10 a.m. Monday in Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., where she had been airlifted by Air Evac.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 1999 Ford Taurus driven by Kevin D. Johnston, 23, of New London, was westbound and tried to pass another vehicle when it struck the passenger side of an eastbound 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Karol D. Sharpe, 45, of Lewistown.
Both vehicles came to rest off the highway. The crash occurred at 1:24 p.m. Seat belts were in use. Martin was a passenger in Johnston's vehicle.
Johnston also was airlifted to Blessing Hospital with serious injuries. He was reported in fair condition Monday but no updated information was available Tuesday.
Sharpe and her passenger, her son, Colten L. Sharpe, 13, were taken by Lewis County Ambulance to Blessing Hospital. Colten Sharpe suffered serious injuries and was transferred to another facility, according to a hospital spokesman. Carol Sharpe was treated and released.
Assisting were the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department and the Ewing Fire and Rescue.
This was the eighth fatality in Highway Patrol’s Troop B’s 16-county area this year.
