Marian Bland, a member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Tioga, has been named Blessing Hospital Chaplain of the Month for April. Bland has been a Blessing Hospital volunteer chaplain for 21/2 years and is a member of the Chaplains Executive Committee. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education, a master's degree in teaching and leadership, and a master's degree in pastoral studies. Bland taught in Chicago for over 30 years. During her time there, she taught high school Catholic Christian doctrine, was a eucharistic minister, and led the Rainbows for All God's Children Program for children dealing with divorce or death. Bland completed a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Loyola Hospital and served a year in Japan as a lay missioner. She and her husband, James, moved to Lima five years ago. Bland is a trained hospice volunteer and secretary for the Adams County Women's Republican Club.


Vigil: A night vigil in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. May 2-3 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Eighth and Chestnut in Quincy. The vigil includes confession, rosaries, Mass, divine mercy chaplet, litanies and benediction. Refreshments will be served. Baccalaureate service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 11, for the Class of 2014 at Central High School's south gymnasium near Camp Point. Pastor Tom Robbins of the nearby Faith Baptist Church will be the keynote speaker. The service is sponsored by parents and friends of the Class of 2014.


First Christian Church, 1415 Maine St., will host Breakfast on the Lawn at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, through the Dogwood Parade. There will be sausage and egg on biscuit for $1.75; sausage, egg and cheese on a biscuit for $2; cinnamon roll for $1.25; homemade baked goodies for $.75; and a choice of beverage for $1. The public is invited to attend, bring a lawn chair, have breakfast, then stay and watch the parade.

The First Christian Church, 117 West Washington, Mount Sterling, will hold a free summer concert series one Sunday a month through October. A free will offering will be taken for the groups. The series begins at 6 p.m. May 11 with The Lesters and continues with Danny Funderburk and Anticipation at 6 p.m. June 8; The Nehrkorns at 6 p.m. July 13; Two by Two Quartet at 6 p.m. Aug. 3; The Goulds at 6 p.m. Sept. 7; and The Chosen Ones at 7 p.m. Oct. 5.
