Great River Recovery Resources of Quincy is merging with Preferred Family Healthcare.

Preferred Family Healthcare, a network of mental health and substance abuse treatment centers, is headquartered in Kirksville, Mo.

The merger will bring about the first PFH location in Illinois.

Great River Recovery Resources, an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, began as the Western Illinois Council on Alcoholism in March 1965. Twenty years later, its name was changed to Great River Recovery Resources to reflect "a positive image and encompass drug abuse treatment services."

The merger will become effective July 1.

Officials from both agencies said the merger will permit them to remain committed to providing compassionate substance abuse and addiction treatment services to Quincy and the surrounding region.

"We are really excited about merging with Preferred Family Healthcare," said Chris Schuering, president of the board of directors at Recovery Resources, who is confident the merger will benefit the community.

"Our concern throughout negotiations was how we were going to move toward our vision of becoming a health-care leader in prevention, recovery, and wellness for our region. This merger represents a huge leap forward in that effort."

Mike Schwend, president and CEO of Preferred Family Healthcare, is equally optimistic.

"As we consider merger opportunities, our first priority is to remain true to our mission, and true to the needs of the community," he said.
