Deters Frozen Custard has entered into a licensing agreement with Daylight Donuts for the purpose of selling its frozen custard and related products.

The Deters' product will be served at Daylight Donuts' location at 1837 Broadway under the Deters name.

Rich and Beth Deters said Thursday they were wanting to go into "semi-retirement," while Daylight Donuts owners Babs and Jim Lock were looking to add to their existing business. The Locks recently contacted the Deters to discuss a merger, and a deal was soon struck.

The removal of equipment from the Deters Frozen Custard site at 3024 Broadway, which the Deters rented from Mark Freiburg, is underway. Babs Lock said she hopes to offer the Deters products within a month. The Deters line will not be available at the Daylight Donuts shop at 48th and Broadway.

Rich Deters said the family's other two business sites in Weldon Springs, Mo., and St. Charles, Mo., are now under similar licensing arrangements.

The Deters name has been tied to dairy-related products in the Quincy area since 1892.

"This is a winning situation for both parties," Rich Deters said. "I'm glad the product will continue to be sold at another family-owned business."

Deters Frozen Custard opened on 36th Street in May 2001 before moving to 3024 Broadway in 2005. It was closed for the season Sept. 30, and Rich Deters had planned to reopen in March.

"I would like to thank all of our customers for their patience during this process," he said. "I would like to assure our loyal customers the product will maintain its standard of excellence and will continue to be made fresh daily with all natural ingredients."

The Locks opened their first Daylight Donuts outlet in September 2004 at 2430 Broadway before opening a second store in November 2009 at 48th and Broadway inside property owned by Madison Park Christian Church. The Locks moved from 2430 Broadway when they built their new site at 1837 Broadway, which opened in mid-2013.

"This is exciting," Babs Lock said. "We are always very busy from about 5 a.m. to noon but wanted something that would bring in more business between noon and 10 p.m., and we feel Deters Frozen Custard will be perfect for that."
