An employee medical clinic is being considered by city officials as they seek bids for its group health insurance plan.
Mayor Kyle Moore said the city may save costs and add benefits if it contracted with a company for a clinic for its 300-plus employees.
"We've read about private companies looking at a health clinic for its employees and seeing that private companies might be realizing savings," he said. "So we thought it was a good idea while we're going out for proposals for our group health coverage to take a look at a member health clinic. We're not saying it's definitely going to be a good fit, but certainly it is worth taking a look at."
Knapheide Manufacturing announced in May that it contracted with Florida-based WeCare TLC to operate a health clinic for its employees. A wellness center on South 36th Street will be staffed with one physician, one or two registered nurses, two medical assistants and clerical staff to offer care to the company's more than 1,200 employees.
The city is expected to spend $4.465 million in health insurance premiums in the current fiscal year. Moore hopes any potential savings could be used to help cover increased pension costs.
"When you have our health care costs over four years that have increased by 45 percent, if we can get a handle on that cost, it may help save a decent amount of money, and then we can use those savings to address our pension costs that are coming down the road," he said.
Bids for the clinic and employee health insurance coverage are due Aug. 14.
The city also sought bids for an employee assistance program that Director of Administrative Services Glenda Hackemack said would provide confidential counseling services for employees.
Bids for that program were returned to the city July 3, but no action has been taken.
