MADISON, Mo. -- A Monroe County woman died Thursday night in a vehicle-train crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Christy Mitcham, 40, of Madison, was driving north on Monroe County Road 1033 about 2.5 miles southwest of Madison at 6:45 p.m. Mitcham failed to stop at a railroad crossing and her 1992 Toyota Previa van was struck in the side by an eastbound Norfolk Southern Engine operated by Scott Backe, 49, of Moberly.

The passenger vehicle traveled off the east side of the road and overturned, ejecting Mitcham, who was not wearing a safety device.

A nonmotorized passive crossbuck is the safety device at that railroad crossing.

Assisting at the scene were the Monroe County Ambulance, EMS and Sheriff's Departments and the Madison Fire Department.

Mitcham was taken to Agnew Funeral Home in Paris. The van was towed by Prathers Towing of Cairo.

Tony Baker recently watched a video of the 1991 Class A state championship game with his 11-year-old daughter. It had been several years since Baker, an all-stater as a senior at Pittsfield High School, had seen the game. "I sure was awful skinny, and those shorts were awful short," he said with a laugh. "But it was neat to watch. It's kind of a blur, but I can remember plays that were called in every game. It's so surreal."
