Appreciation: A celebration of appreciation for the Rev. James A. and Eloise Hailey's service will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Bethel AME Church in Quincy. The Rev. Hailey has been active in the community since moving to Quincy nine years ago. He has been preaching for 31 years. Hailey has been a chaplain at Blessing Hospital for eight years and chosen as chaplain of the month three times. He is president of the Redmon and Lee Youth and Adult Association and has been a board member for the past seven years. The Rev. and Mrs. Hailey have been married 37 years and have two daughters, Shanette and Katrina, and five grandchildren.

Missionary: Veteran missionary Clarence Moore will speak at 9 and 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Gem City Baptist Church, 2821 Oak in Quincy. Moore has helped establish more than 200 churches in Asia. For information, call 217-316-0083.


Worship in the Park: First Christian Church in Quincy will have worship in Wavering Park's large pavilion at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. The youth group the Link will participate in the service. There will be no Sunday school. Participants may bring their own lunches or can reserve a $5 box lunch by calling 217-222-0812 by Monday, Aug. 18. Anyone attending should bring lawn chairs.


Annual Homecoming: The annual Bethel Homecoming will be Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Bethel Church in Griggsville. A basket dinner will be at 12:30 p.m., followed by a church music program at 2 p.m. Music will be provided by violinist Meredith Spradlin, a Burlend descendant and descendant of Josiah Wade. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, table service and lawn chair.

Park Celebration: Lutherfest 2014 will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, in Paloma Park. The event will begin with a contemporary worship service followed by a potluck supper. The event will also include a volleyball tournament, face painting and yard games. The Puppet Posse will give a presentation for children. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and dishes to share. Mission Fundraiser: First Christian Church, 1415 Maine St., will have an ice cream social from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in the church's Fellowship Hall. The meal will include sandwiches, chips, beverages, homemade cake and homemade ice cream. A freewill offering will benefit Armenian mission work.

Barbecue Social: Wayland (Mo.) United Methodist Church will have a barbecue and ice cream social from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. The menu will include brats, polish sausage, hot dogs, maid rites, assorted salads, baked beans, homemade ice cream and homemade pies. Donations will be accepted.

Ice Cream Social: An ice cream social will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Clayton Christian Church. There will be ice cream, sandwiches, desserts and toppings. A freewill offering will be accepted.

Simulcast: The Crossing, 150 S. 48th, will hold a Beth Moore Living Proof Live simulcast from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in the church. Tickets are $20, with a $5 optional lunch, and can be purchased at the Crossing. For information, call 217-224-6374.


Beyond Divorce: A Divorce and Beyond workshop is being offered at St. Francis for people who are divorced. People of all faiths and beliefs are welcome. The team leaders consist of formerly divorced people and a retired judge formerly assigned to family court. Topics covered include the process of divorce, positive self-image, handling stress, expressing anger, dealing with blame and guilt, overcoming difficulties, the decision to forgive, pathways to growth, children of divorce and the annulment process (for Catholics). Registration is required, and a $20 donation for materials is requested. The sessions will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 8, 15, 22, 29, and Oct. 6, 13, 20, and ending Monday, Oct. 27.
