Quincy University Athletic Director Marty Bell said Wednesday junior basketball guard Larry Dumas will not play this season in the wake of his arrest on a felony charge of aggravated assault.
“Larry and I ... decided it was best for him to sit out to deal with this issue, determine the resolution and move on from there,” said Bell, who also serves as QU’s basketball coach. “Larry is a fine student and person, but he’s obviously dealing with a difficult issue.”
The decision was reached after Bell and Dumas met Wednesday morning.
The Herald-Whig reported Tuesday that Dumas, 20, was charged earlier this month with aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, after he allegedly struck another QU student during a Sept. 13 on-campus altercation.
According to charging documents, Dumas hit David A. Williams, a QU junior, in the face with his fist, breaking two bones. First Assistant State’s Attorney Gary Farha said Williams suffered a broken jaw.
Dumas was arrested on Oct. 1. He was released on his own recognizance in lieu of $7,500 bond. He pleaded not guilty to the charges Oct. 20 and waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
He is scheduled for the December jury docket.
Dumas is being represented by Public Defender David Farmer. The charges levied against Dumas carry a penalty between two and five years in jail and a fine of up to $25,000.
Dumas, a 6-foot-2 swingman from Chicago, spent his freshman season at Western Illinois University and transferred to Southeastern Community College in Burlington, Iowa, last season. An ACL injury cut his season short last year.
“Obviously, it’s a situation we have to deal with,” Bell said of losing Dumas from the team. “We were counting on him, but I have to think about the team and Larry and what’s best for all parties involved.”
