Indoor horse racing in Quincy?

You bet.

The Mid-Mississippi Muddy Water Blues Society hosts its second annual Blue Note Derby Saturday night at Turner Hall in Quincy. There will be 36 "horses" to bid on and seven "races."

Last year's event drew about 75 people, and Jerry Davis of the Blues Society said a crowd should hopefully double for this year's event.

"It was such a good event and the people had such a good time, and we've done a better job of getting the word out, we should have a much better crowd," Davis said.

Different stick horses will be on display and people can purchase them before the races. Horses this year include Bud from Budweiser, Silver Bullet from Coors Light, and an Advance Physical Therapy horse called Flexie.

Horses will run in marked lanes and advance by rolls of dice. The winner of each of the six heats will advance to the finals and win a $25 gift certificate from a local business.

The grand prize winner gets a $50 gift certificate from Tiramisu Restaurant in Quincy.

Non-racers can also enter the Lucky Chances Pot to try to guess the winning horses, and split a pot with the Blues Society.

Ted Tappe has assembled a band called Ted's Blues Jammers to play, with food and drink available for purchase, as well. The event will also celebrate the 15th birthday of the Blues Society.

Proceeds will go toward a Blues Society music scholarship.

"It will help a young and aspiring musical student looking for a little help with college expenses," Davis said.
