Two candidates have filed nominating petitions for the office of regional superintendent of schools for Adams and Pike counties.
Debbie Niederhauser of Quincy is seeking the Republican nomination,
while Donna Hildebrand-Veile of Fowler filed for the Democratic
nomination. Both candidates submitted their petitions at the State
Board of Elections office in Springfield during the past week. The
filing period ended Monday.
Niederhauser and Hildebrand-Veile will be unopposed in the Feb. 2
primary and will face each other in the Nov. 2 general election.
The incumbent, Republican Ray Scheiter of Quincy, is in his fourth
four-year term and recently announced he would not seek re-election.
The regional superintendent's term differs from other elected
positions. While most officeholders who win the Nov. 2, 2010, general
elections will be seated fairly quickly -- in either December 2010 or
January 2011 -- the next regional superintendent won't take office
until July 1, 2011.
In Adams County, three more candidates stepped forward before
Monday's 5 p.m. filing deadline to submit nominating petitions for the
primary. Some competition surfaced as a result.
Duane Venvertloh of Payson filed for the Republican nomination for
the County Board seat in District 7 held by incumbent Republican Lyle
Nichols, who was appointed earlier this year.
Nichols filed for election last week. So that means Venvertloh and
Nichols will square off in the February primary, with the winner
advancing to the general election.
Also filing Monday were two County Board candidates in District 4.
Incumbent John Johnson of Quincy filed for the Republican nomination,
and Kevin Broemmer of Quincy filed for the Democratic nomination. Both
will be unopposed in the primary and will face off in the general
election.
