HANNIBAL, Mo. -- A Hannibal family was forced from their home after a fire started accidentally by a wood stove Saturday night destroyed their residence at 1700 Broadway.

Firefighters said the blaze began in the rear of the home and moved to the attic and walls. No one was injured, but a couple and their three children were forced out of the home and lost all their possessions, firefighters said.

Firefighters responded at about 10:45 p.m. and were on the scene until about 4 o'clock Sunday morning. Acting Hannibal Fire Chief Bill Madore said an investigator from the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office determined the blaze was accidentally started by a wood stove inside the residence.

Madore said firefighters entered the wood-frame house to try to fight the fire, but conditions forced them outside.

"There were no fire stops inside, and that assisted in the rapid fire spread," Madore said. "It took us a while to get a handle on it."

Sixteen firefighters responded with two engine companies, a ladder truck and a rescue vehicle.

The home, owned by Molly Grover, was being rented by Jason and Gabrielle Saxbury. They found a place to stay after the fire but need clothing and other items.
